Biomaterials: From Recipe to Sample

How can gelatine, sawdust and other natural raw materials become new materials?

In this course, we will explore, make and test biomaterials. We will start with simple bioplastics and then move on to hard biocomposites that can be processed in a similar way to wood.

Using different natural polymers, such as alginate, cellulose and gelatine, we will make thin films and light foams, and observe how the material changes depending on its composition and the production process. We will adjust recipes, compare results and test which materials are flexible, which are brittle, which transmit light and what they are best suited for based on their properties.

When working with hard biocomposites, we will combine natural binders with waste sawdust from Center Rog’s Wood Lab. We will learn how to model this material by hand, dry it properly and prepare it for further processing.

At the end, we will also focus on colour. Using natural pigments, we will prepare coatings that can protect our materials or enrich them decoratively.

The course is intended for anyone who wants to understand how a biomaterial is made from the first recipe to the final sample. You will learn the basics of biodesign and making with biomaterials, and gain a foundation for further independent experimentation.

The programme will take place over four sessions:

  • 7 October 2026: introduction to biomaterials, raw materials and basic production processes;
  • 14 October 2026: bioplastics – films, foams and testing material properties;
  • 21 October 2026: making and machine-processing hard biocomposites;
  • 28 October 2026: natural pigments, colouring and making coatings.

The course is intended for participants aged 14 and above and for anyone interested in biomaterials, design and experimenting with new materials. No prior knowledge is required.

About the mentors
The course will be led by mentors from the Green Lab.
