Waxed napkins
15. 6. 2024
Summer is almost here, bringing with it outings in nature, picnic times, garden parties, and outdoor joy. To keep our environment as clean and tidy as possible during these activities, let's try to avoid single-use plastic wraps and foils this year. Instead, let's use handcrafted waxed napkins that will stay with you for years to come. Not only do they keep our food fresh and clean, but they also add a special atmosphere to any event with their beauty.
In the textile lab, we will create the first part of a decorative napkin for food wrapping. We will cut a square from cotton fabric, which we will later edge with decorative stitching on a household sewing machine and draw a decorative border of our choice. This will serve as a frame for the next steps, which will be followed in the green lab; there, participants will print real flowers on their napkin using the hammer printing technique. This transfers natural pigments onto the fabric, leaving colorful surprises.
We will coat our textile creation with a mixture of beeswax, jojoba oil, and resin, thereby protecting the natural pigments to make them more durable. Additionally, the coating allows the fabric to adhere and maintain its shape, so we can wrap food in it to keep it fresh for longer.
The result of the workshop will be a unique protective waxed napkin that can be used again and again for your meals.
The workshop is suitable for teenagers aged 12 to 16 who wish to make a unique waxed textile napkin (for sandwiches, salads, desserts, etc.). No prior knowledge is required.
About the mentors:
The workshop will be led by Sašo Jakob, a mentor in the Green Lab, a student of biochemistry passionate about combining science and design, and Vita Ivilić, a mentor in the Textile Lab, a master of dyeing and printing with botanical colors and a general enthusiast of natural materials.
