What are gemstones? What types of gemstones exist, and how does a gemstone's color influence its value?

You will learn all this and more in this series of professional lectures, where we will explore everything about gemstones—from theory to terminology.

The Introduction to Gemology series is designed for professionals in the fields of jewelry making, goldsmithing, or those otherwise engaged with gemstones. You will gain insight into the world of gemstones, learn about crystal systems in nature, recognize natural stones versus synthetic ones, and familiarize yourself with the latest terminology in gemology.

Each of the five meetings will focus on a specific topic:

  • First meeting: What is a gemstone? Understanding that the market includes various types of gemstones, terminology in the gemstone world, crystal systems, and reading gemstone reports.
  • Second meeting: What causes color in gemstones, families of gemstones with multiple colors, naming variations, and the influence of color on value.
  • Third meeting: Pearls, coral, amber.
  • Fourth meeting: Inclusions in natural, synthetic, and simulant stones. Types of inclusions, identifying synthetic diamonds and colored stones without inclusions, and the effect of inclusions on gemstone value.
  • Fifth meeting: An introduction to the practical aspects of gemology and the use of gemological instruments.

Participation is free but binding. If you commit to the series, we expect you to attend all the lectures.
