Summer Linen Shirt
4. 7. 2024
Summer and hot days are already here, bringing with them the time for evening gatherings, day trips, travels, or just lounging on the beach. To feel comfortable and yet stylish during all these activities, join us in the textile lab for a multi-day course on sewing a summer linen shirt.
Even though we will be sewing it by hand, using methods from the 18th century, the finished product will be suitable for any modern summer outfit. Discover the incredible possibilities of hand sewing and the precious textile techniques that once adorned the clothing of our ancestors, and try them out yourself! Make your own linen shirt in a completely sustainable way, test the capabilities of your fine manual skills, and socialize and chat with other artisans. Together, we will learn:
- The history of sewing basic linen garments in the 18th century.
- Methods of embellishment, embroidery, and ornamentation used on such products.
- Hand-sewing techniques that ensure durability even with regular washing.
- How to take measurements, make a plan, and cut pattern pieces, as well as how to assemble the shirt.
For the workshop, you will need only a few hours of time and patience. We will mostly use hand sewing methods, so basic knowledge of hand sewing is desirable. We will simplify sewing simple straight stitches with a sewing machine.
The workshop is suitable for participants of all ages and genders.
Duration: 4 sessions of 4 hours each
- Wednesday, June 26, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
- Thursday, June 27, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
- Wednesday, July 3, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
- Thursday, July 4, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
What we will learn:
- In the first session, we will create a geometric pattern using one of the basic elements - a triangle in a square. Each participant will be able to assemble their own version of the pattern from the created elements. We will prepare a quilt sandwich for quilting.
- In the second session, we will quilt the front of the pillow using a special foot with dual feed. Using the envelope method, we will make the back of the pillow and sew all the elements into the final product.
Prerequisites:
YES, basic knowledge of hand sewing is desirable.
Does the workshop count as training?
YES, by participating in the workshop, you will complete training for the sewing workstation (valued at €30 for members/€40 for non-members), and next time you will be able to use this workstation independently during open sessions.
About the mentors:
The course will be led by Uroš Topič, head of the textile lab, textile and fashion designer, tailor, and enthusiast of historical clothing, and Vita Ivičič, mentor in the textile lab, master of dyeing and printing with botanical dyes, and overall enthusiast of natural materials.
