In this workshop, you will explore two different approaches to creating and using biomaterials while making a unique table lamp from natural and recycled materials.

In the first part of the workshop, we will cultivate bacterial cellulose in the form of a SCOBY (kombucha) into a durable biomaterial known as “kombucha leather.” This flexible and breathable material will be processed into a lampshade, which you can optionally color with natural pigments and add textured reliefs.

The second part of the workshop focuses on creating solid biocomposites from plant-based raw materials such as sawdust, straw, bran, or husks. You will shape these materials into a handmade lamp base, and attach the kombucha leather lampshade to it using 3D-printed holders.

You will also learn the principles of circular design, various ways to use and process biomaterials, and natural coatings for protecting or finishing surfaces. The workshop combines hands-on practice with experimentation using materials of the future.

Who is the workshop for?

The workshop is suitable for anyone interested in the intersection of design, sustainability, and experimentation with alternative materials. No prior knowledge is required.

Course dates:

6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th November 2025
Time: 17:00–20:00

Mentors:

The workshop is led by the mentors of the Green Lab at Center Rog, specialists in biomaterials and sustainable design practices.

Participants should arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled start time in the main lobby of Center Rog.
Please store personal belongings in the lockers provided by the mentor. Do not be late, as this disrupts the workflow; late entry to the workshop cannot be guaranteed.
