Making a Wooden Bowl with Power Carving Tools

With wood, there is hardly any waste. Even a piece that may seem unusable at first glance can become a unique object with a bit of knowledge, imagination and patience. In this workshop, we will use a piece of solid wood, perhaps even one that would otherwise end up as firewood, and turn it into a functional, hand-shaped wooden bowl.

We will make the bowl using the power carving technique, a contemporary approach to shaping and carving wood with handheld power tools. Instead of traditional chisels or knives, we will use an angle grinder or a straight grinder with special attachments, which allow for fast and precise material removal and the creation of organic forms.

In the workshop, we will learn how to choose a suitable piece of wood and how to safely use power carving tools. During the process, we will look at the details that matter when shaping a bowl, how to gradually remove material and how to develop a form that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

At the end, we will also discuss how to properly dry a wooden object and finish its surface to achieve a pleasant, silky feel. The result will be a unique bowl that can decorate your home or be used for serving nuts, fruit and other dry snacks.

All the knowledge will be put into practice, as you will make your own wooden bowl under the guidance of the mentor and take it home at the end of the workshop

About the mentor
The workshop will be led by Peter Osterveršnik, an electronics engineer by training who has spent most of his professional career working with 3D design and CNC programming. For him, working with wood offers a different, more hands-on way of creating, where both the process and the feeling of the finished object matter. The workshop was inspired by his first handmade wooden Kuksa cup, which led him to explore more efficient ways of shaping wood by hand. In the workshop, he will share the approach he has developed over the years using modern power carving tools.
