Bobbin Lace-Making Meet-Up for Children and Young People

Would you like to create beautiful lace, learn new skills and enjoy good company along the way?

Join the Bobbin Lace-Making Meet-Up for Children and Young People, where we will explore the art of interlacing threads on a lace pillow. We will learn basic bobbin lace-making techniques, get to know the tools and gradually create motifs that you will be able to show to your family and friends.

Bobbin lace-making develops precision, hand coordination, persistence and patience, while also offering a pleasant way to spend time together and learn in a small group. We will begin with simple motifs and later try out different patterns chosen by the participants.

Did you know that bobbin lace is one of the recognisable symbols of Slovenian identity? In Slovenia, it has an uninterrupted tradition of more than a century and is inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The meet-up is intended for children and young people aged 6 to 15. No prior knowledge is required.

Lace pillows or punklji and other basic materials will be available for use during the meet-up. Participants may also bring their own materials if they wish. We will need a lace pillow or punkelj, a small stool or basket, 7 pairs of bobbins, cotton lace-making thread no. 30, stainless steel pins and a 0.6 crochet hook. The mentor will guide participants and advise them on materials during the meet-up.

Schedule

The first part of the meet-up will take place on Thursdays from 15:00 to 16:00, from 8 October 2026 to 18 February 2027, in Studio 15.

The second part will take place from 4 March to 27 May 2027 and will be published separately.

For anyone who is not yet sure whether bobbin lace-making is for them, there will be a free introductory meeting on Thursday, 24 September 2026, at 15:00 in Studio 15, where mentor Majda will answer any questions.

About the mentor

The meet-up will be led by Majda Jurkovič, a retired preschool and primary school teacher. She leads the Ljubljana Bobbin Lace Society and works with various handicraft techniques in her free time.

Participants should gather in the entrance hall of Center Rog 15 minutes before the programme begins. Please store your personal belongings in the lockers indicated by the mentor. Do not be late, as this disrupts the working process. In case of late arrival, entry to the lab cannot be guaranteed.

The programme is held in Slovenian unless stated otherwise.

The programme is intended for children and young people aged 6 to 15.

In case of cancellation, you will be notified two days before the planned start of the programme.

If you are unable to attend the programme, the fee is non-refundable and the date cannot be changed. You may transfer your place to another person by notifying us at least 24 hours before the start at alja.fir@center-rog.si.
