In collaboration with Studio Draž, we are organizing a masterclass in jacquard knitting on the Kniterate digital knitting machine. The programme is intended for fashion and textile designers, as well as anyone interested in exploring digital machine knitting and applying it to their own textile or fashion projects.

Studio Draž is one of the leading names in machine knitting in the region. Under the mentorship of Urška and Tomaž Draž, we will explore the full process of creating a knitted garment: from the initial idea, designing jacquard patterns, knitting and testing textures, to cutting, sewing and finishing the final piece.

The Kniterate knitting machine is a smaller, studio-based version of an industrial knitting machine. It offers a wide range of techniques and enables computer-based pattern design, including multicoloured jacquard motifs in up to 5 colours.

During the masterclass, you will develop an idea for your own piece — a jumper or cardigan with a jacquard pattern. The programme includes eight four-hour group sessions: four sessions will focus on knitting, and four on cutting, sewing and finishing the garment. In addition to the group sessions, the programme also includes individual time slots on the Kniterate machine.

A wide selection of materials in different compositions and colours will be available. After consulting the mentors, you may also bring your own yarn, provided it is suitable for machine knitting.

You will need your own laptop for the course.

What are jacquard patterns?

Jacquard patterns are multicoloured, complex motifs created by carefully controlling individual threads during weaving or knitting. The name comes from the invention of Joseph Marie Jacquard, whose loom operated using punched cards. This invention is considered one of the early steps towards the automation of textile production and an important precursor to computer programming.

Programme structure

The course counts as training for independent use of the Kniterate digital knitting machine. After completing the course, you will be able to use this workstation independently. You will need your own laptop.

About the mentors

Urška and Tomaž Draž have been creating knitwear under the Draž brand since 1988. Their work is based on a deep understanding of textile craft and contemporary knitting technologies. They are regarded as leading knitwear designers in the region and will guide participants at Center Rog through the entire process of designing and making a knitted garment — all the way to the final presentation.

***

Participants should gather in the entrance hall of Center Rog 15 minutes before the programme begins. Please store your personal belongings in the lockers indicated by the mentor. Do not be late, as this disrupts the working process. In case of late arrival, entry to the lab cannot be guaranteed.

The programme is held in Slovenian unless stated otherwise.

In case of cancellation, you will be notified two days before the planned start of the programme.

If you are unable to attend the programme, the fee is non-refundable and the date cannot be changed. You may transfer your place to another person by notifying us at least 24 hours before the start at tekstil@center-rog.si.

We look forward to your company and creating together!
