Biomaterial Lamp

How can sawdust, starch and bioplastics become a lamp?

In this course, we will explore biomaterials through hands-on work and combine them with 3D-printed elements to create our own lamp. We will learn the basics of working with biomaterials, biodesign and combining different materials into a functional object.

Using starch and waste sawdust, we will make a solid biocomposite and shape it into a form that will serve as the base of the lamp. For the lampshades, we will create thin, translucent and colourful bioplastic surfaces. One of them will also be a vegan leather-like material made from bacterial cellulose that forms on kombucha.

The 3D-printed parts will act as connecting elements in the structure: they will hold the light bulb and allow the lampshades to be attached. This construction approach makes it possible to adapt the basic design to different types of lamps and to your own aesthetic preferences.

The final product can be a small bedside or table lamp, a pendant light, a chandelier or a slightly larger floor lamp.

The course is designed as a material exploration through making. You will take home your own lamp and gain a better understanding of how natural, waste and biodegradable materials can be transformed into new functional objects.

No prior knowledge is required.

The programme will take place over three sessions:

About the mentors

The course is led by mentors from Center Rog’s Green Lab, where we develop programmes in biomaterials, circular design, biodesign and hands-on exploration of natural and waste materials.

Participants should gather in the entrance hall of Center Rog 15 minutes before the programme begins. Please store your personal belongings in the lockers indicated by the mentor. Do not be late, as this disrupts the working process. In case of late arrival, entry to the lab cannot be guaranteed.

The programme is held in Slovenian unless stated otherwise.

The programme is intended for participants over the age of 14 unless stated otherwise.

In case of cancellation, you will be notified two days before the planned start of the programme.

If you are unable to attend the programme, the fee is non-refundable and the date cannot be changed. You may transfer your place to another person by notifying us at least 24 hours before the start at zeleni@center-rog.si.
