Gašper Kunšič
Gašper Kunšič is an artist working at the intersection of art and design, based in Frankfurt am Main. His practice is deeply rooted in the visual and cultural lexicon of his origins and the wider Balkan region, reconfiguring folkloric motifs, pop culture, and socialist iconography into emotionally charged environments. Through spatial interventions, scenographic installations, and performative elements, he queers tradition, crafting spaces of belonging for those who exist beyond normative structures. Drawing from primal memories, he weaves melodies, images, and visions into a harmonious cacophony, referencing popular music, design elements, and collective memory to construct bridges between personal and shared histories. His work transforms archetypal symbols of his upbringing—folk traditions, socialist monumentalism, and Catholic iconography—into theatrical compositions that invite queer readings. Infused with both melancholy and humor, his practice balances utopian aspirations with the weight of historical memory, layering sorrow and hope into shimmering visual expressions. His recent work integrates digital fabrication techniques with traditional craftsmanship, exploring the potential of hybrid objects and experimental materials. During his residency at Center Rog, he will further investigate digital manufacturing processes such as textile embroidery and CNC milling, aiming to merge artisanal techniques with contemporary production methods. Particularly drawn to the possibilities of textile-based elements in his sculptural practice, he seeks to develop new material approaches that intertwine personal and collective memory with technological innovation. Kunšič has exhibited at Belvedere21, Wien Museum MUSA, and House of Spouse in Vienna, Schiller-Museum in Weimar, as well as the City Gallery, Škuc Gallery, and Ravnikar Gallery in Ljubljana, and UGM in Maribor. He has participated in the Biennial of Design BIO28 in Ljubljana, the EKO Triennial of Art and Environment in Maribor, the Youth Biennial in Belgrade, and the Mediterranea Biennial in San Marino. Recently, he was awarded the Willingshausen residency and won the R&S Daimlerstraße GmbH Film Award.
