Mycelium lampshade (in Slovenian)

Did you know that the largest known organism on Earth is not a whale, but a fungus? Mycelium — the branching underground network of fungi — is an extraordinary natural structure that connects forests, breaks down organic matter and creates new living environments. Today, it is also inspiring designers, architects and researchers, as it opens up many possibilities for the development of sustainable biomaterials.

In this workshop, we will explore how mycelium can be used to create lightweight, strong and fully biodegradable objects. We will discover the entire process of making a product — from the initial idea to the final object. First, we will learn about the basics of designing with mycelium-based biomaterials, their properties, possible uses, and examples from contemporary design and architecture.

We will make moulds and prepare a lampshade for a ceiling lamp or chandelier. We will learn how mycelium grows through a natural substrate, why the shape of the mould affects the final object, and which conditions the material needs in order to grow successfully. In this way, we will understand the full production process — from preparing the material and growing the mycelium to drying and stabilising the biomaterial.

Each participant will also receive a kit with all the elements needed to assemble their own lamp. Since mycelium needs several days to grow, the finished pieces will be ready for collection a few days after the workshop.

The workshop is intended for curious makers who want to explore the future of sustainable design through hands-on experience and create a lamp that brings together nature, technology and contemporary design. No prior knowledge is required.

About the mentor
Rok Oblak is an independent maker working on the development of products made from natural materials and biocomposites. He is the founder of the brand Salto Dionys and collaborates with the Krater collective and the Levo workshop, where he also has his studio.

Participants should gather 15 minutes before the scheduled start time in the entrance hall of Center Rog. Please store your personal belongings in the lockers, which the mentor will show you. Please be on time, as late arrivals disrupt the workflow. In the case of a delay, entry to the lab cannot be guaranteed.

The program will be conducted in Slovenian unless stated otherwise.

The program is intended for participants older than 14 years, except where noted otherwise.

In case of cancellation, you will be notified two days before the scheduled start.

If you are unable to attend the program, the registration fee is non-refundable, and it is not possible to change the date. You can transfer your participation to another person, but please notify us at least 24 hours before the program begins at the email address: zeleni@center-rog.si
