Decorations made from biomaterials
6. 12. 2025
In this year’s edition of the ornament-making workshop, we will create natural-looking ornaments using three different materials. To make soft white ornaments, we will use mushroom mycelium; for colorful, diverse ornaments with interesting textures and patterns, we will work with bioplastics combined with various preparation methods; and for more elegant, crystalline ornaments, we will use borax and alum—solutions with a high affinity for crystal formation.
We will inoculate sterile sawdust with mycelium and, through this, learn the basics of simple sterile work with microbes. We will experiment with bioplastics and explore their properties in different forms, and we will also learn how to grow crystals. This year's workshop is intended for both children and adults.
This edition is suitable for adults and children aged 10 and above. The price is per participant.
About the mentors:
The workshop will be led by mentors from the Green Lab.
Sašo Jakob is a biochemistry student interested in exploring the intersections of science and design in all its forms.
Maruša Ramšak is a biotechnologist who researched synthetic biology at the National Institute of Chemistry. She loves nature, enjoys gardening, and is passionate about all things fermented. She is fascinated by the behavior of different organisms and how they can contribute to sustainable development and solving challenges in environmental conservation, green technologies, and food security.
