Design at the center: Marko Japelj

In April, as part of the talk series Design at the Center, we are hosting Marko Japelj.

Marko Japelj is one of the key Slovenian stage designers, whose work has shaped contemporary theatre, opera, and dance productions in the international arena for more than three decades. From his early collaborations with Tomaž Pandur to the present, he has created nearly 400 stage designs for venues across Europe and beyond. His practice establishes space as an active dramaturgical structure. Reduction, tension, and precise composition of volume create conditions in which meaning is generated through the relationship between body, light, and void.

The conversation will focus on his authorial method, the process of scenography creation, and the dynamics of collaboration with directors, costume designers, and lighting designers. We will also open questions of international practice and the ways in which a continuous presence is established within the global production landscape.

An insight into a practice that does not accompany space, but creates it.
