Natural dyeing of textiles (in Slovenian)
21. 5. 2026
In the workshop, we will step into the world of natural textile dyeing and, through the full process, create our own unique silk scarf. We will learn how to extract colours from natural sources, how to prepare them, and how to permanently bind them to textiles.
We will start with the basics. First, we will discuss the differences between materials and learn how to properly prepare fabric, which is key for successful dyeing. We will continue by exploring natural pigments derived from plants and everyday biological materials, discovering how different processes influence the final colour shades.
A special focus will be placed on the chemistry of dye baths and the role of mordants (fixing agents), which ensure colour fastness. Through simple adjustments such as pH regulation, we will observe how colours shift and open up new creative possibilities.
In the practical part, we will use the shibori technique, creating unique patterns through folding, binding, and shaping. We will gradually dye the silk scarf, layer shades, and develop the final appearance of the piece.
During the workshop we will:
- prepare textiles for dyeing and understand differences between fibres;
- explore natural dyes and methods of their extraction;
- use mordants to fix colour;
- study the effect of pH on colour tones;
- create patterns using the shibori technique;
- dye and finish our silk scarf.
The workshop is intended for anyone who wants to create sustainably, explore colour, and develop a sense for textiles. At the end, we will take home our unique product and knowledge that can be used in further creative work.
