Making a Wooden Bowl with Power Carving Tools

From a piece of wood—even one that might otherwise be discarded or used for firewood—you can create a beautiful and functional object. In this creative workshop, we will demonstrate that there is almost no waste when working with wood. Using the power carving technique, we will transform a solid piece of wood into a handmade, practical, and aesthetically pleasing bowl.

Power carving is a modern woodworking technique using handheld electric tools, such as an angle grinder or rotary tool with specialized attachments. It allows for fast material removal, precision, and the creation of organic, unique shapes.

During the workshop, we will select a suitable piece of wood, learn the basics of safe and proper tool usage, and identify the details to pay special attention to during shaping and finishing. You will also learn how to properly dry and surface-treat your piece to achieve a silky touch and long-lasting usability. Under the guidance of the mentor, you will craft your own unique bowl, which you can take home at the end of the workshop.

Mentor
Peter Osterveršnik is trained as an electronics engineer and spent most of his career 3D designing and preparing CNC programs. In his free time, he works with wood. His passion for carving began when he made a wooden kuksa cup for his father’s birthday. Realizing how long and physically demanding manual carving can be, he sought more efficient solutions. Today, he gladly shares his knowledge and experience, combining traditional craftsmanship values with modern tools.

Participants should gather 15 minutes before the scheduled time in the entrance hall of Center Rog. Please store personal belongings in the lockers shown by the mentor. Do not be late, as this disrupts the workflow. Entry to the lab cannot be guaranteed in case of delay.

The program is conducted in Slovenian unless otherwise stated.

In case of cancellation, we will inform you at least two days before the planned start. If you cannot attend, the fee is non-refundable and rescheduling is not possible. Participation may be transferred to another person if we are notified at least 24 hours in advance at les@center-rog.si.
