Make Your Own Phenakistoscope (in Slovenian)
28. 3. 2026
Did you know that people were creating moving images long before movies and computers? In this workshop, we will explore the phenakistoscope, a 19th-century optical toy that brings static drawings to life through spinning and a mirror, creating a short animation. Using a laser cutter, we will make our own phenakistoscope and then draw a series of images on it that will come alive when spun.
Participants will explore the basic principles of animation and discover how art and technology can intertwine in a playful and creative way. At the end, each participant will take home their own unique optical toy – a spinning disk that creates the magic of motion right before their eyes.
This workshop is suitable for children aged 9 and older.
The workshop is part of the Educational Program project by the Društvo Slon association, co-financed by the Slovenian Film Centre, a public agency of the Republic of Slovenia.
