In-House Glass Course: Casting

In this course, we will explore the technique of shaping glass by casting it into moulds. Each participant will make their own crystal glass tealight holder.

The programme combines theory and practice. We will learn about the properties of glass, the basics of product planning, different forming processes, and the processes of kiln firing and cold working glass.

Programme by session

Session 1: theory and modelling the tealight holder
The first session will focus on getting to know the material and the technique of casting glass into moulds. To make the process easier to understand, we will begin with a theoretical introduction, after which each participant will model their own tealight holder, which will later be used to make a mould.

Session 2: making moulds and casting glass
We will learn how to make our own mould, how to load glass into it correctly and understand the basics of kiln firing. We will observe how glass behaves when heated and how to make it melt and take on the shape of the mould.

Session 3: cold working and decoration
The third session will focus on cold working glass, which gives the pieces their final appearance. We will take the pieces out of the kiln, clean them, round the edges if needed, and continue with grinding and polishing. We will also learn about finishing and decoration techniques that allow you to add a personal touch to your piece.

Schedule

The programme will take place over three sessions:

• Thursday, 22 October 2026, from 16:00 to 20:00
• Thursday, 29 October 2026, from 16:00 to 20:00
• Thursday, 5 November 2026, from 16:00 to 20:00

No prior knowledge is required.

The course counts as training for machine-based cold working of glass and the use of glass kilns. After completing the course, you will be able to use the relevant workstations independently, in accordance with the lab rules.

About the mentors

The course will be led by Nika Šantej and Nina Podobnikar, mentors of the Glass and Ceramics Lab.

Participants should gather in the entrance hall of Center Rog 15 minutes before the programme begins. Please store your personal belongings in the lockers indicated by the mentor. Do not be late, as this disrupts the working process. In case of late arrival, entry to the lab cannot be guaranteed.

The programme is held in Slovenian unless stated otherwise.

In case of cancellation, you will be notified two days before the planned start of the programme.

If you are unable to attend the programme, the fee is non-refundable and the date cannot be changed. You may transfer your place to another person by notifying us at least 24 hours before the start at steklokeramika@center-rog.si.
