Advanced Workshop: Creating a 16-Piece Ceramic Tableware Set
18. 12. 2024
Working with clay is not only popular for the many ways it allows creativity to flourish. The process of shaping, kneading, and smoothing clay is also calming and lets us connect with this earthly material, which is especially appealing in today’s digital age.
Join the clay design workshop and experience the satisfaction of creating something tangible, like clay and ceramic products.
In the advanced workshop, we will design and create a 16-piece ceramic tableware set, which can include larger and smaller plates, cups, bowls, and mugs. All materials are included in the price. We will also explore the design aspect of creation and answer questions such as how to approach planning, sketching, and production. Based on your sketches and plans, you will create your tableware set. The course will also cover decorating and glazing techniques. You will work in the plaster workshop, glazing studio, and with kilns.
After completing both the beginner and advanced courses, you will be able to independently use three workstations in the ceramics lab (Ceramics 1 – wheel, free-form design table, roller, extruder; glazing studio and plaster workshop; kilns) during open hours.
Over six sessions, we will learn:
Session 1:
Planning – preparing sketches and a work plan: Create sketches and plan your ceramic set based on your acquired knowledge. You can choose any technique for your set. Consider the design aspects of the project (mood board, sketches, plan). During the first session, you will also select the type of clay, appropriate glaze, etc.
Session 2:
Creating the set: Work on your ceramic tableware set using all the tools and machines available in the ceramics lab.
Session 3:
Creating the set: Continue working on your ceramic tableware set using all the tools and machines available in the ceramics lab.
Session 4:
Creating the set: Continue working on your ceramic tableware set using all the tools and machines available in the ceramics lab. Start stacking dry pieces in the kiln. Learn how to use the kiln properly, coat the kiln shelves, and load the pieces prepared for firing.
Session 5:
Glazing: Glaze bisque-fired pieces and decorate them using additional decorative techniques (underglaze colors, transfers, etc.). Start stacking the pieces in the kiln.
Session 6:
Glazing and kiln loading: Finalize the glazing and load the pieces into the kiln. After firing is complete, you can collect your finished set in the glass-ceramics lab.
The course is intended for anyone who already has basic knowledge of working with clay and wishes to create a ceramic tableware set under expert mentorship. During the course, you will become thoroughly familiar with our ceramics lab, which you will later be able to use independently during open hours. The program is designed for participants aged 14 and older.
