Chasing is an ancient metalworking technique historically used in the area of present-day Slovenia; for example, the famous Vače Situla was made using this method. It represents an important part of cultural and craft heritage, which is unfortunately gradually disappearing today.

This demonstration will offer a fascinating insight into the process of metal shaping and a rare opportunity to engage with knowledge passed down through generations. The chasing technique can be explored in greater detail in a masterclass this autumn.

Biography of the Author

Christoph Steidl Porenta was born in 1965 in Munich, Germany. In 1988, he joined the goldsmith school at the Münsterschwarzach Abbey, completing the theoretical part of his training in Würzburg. He passed his goldsmith exam in 1991 and his silversmith exam in 1992.

Since 1993, he has worked as an independent designer in goldsmithing, silversmithing, and restoration at his workshop, Zlatarna Zlato Runo. In recent years, he has participated in numerous exhibitions in Slovenia, Germany, and France, both as a goldsmith and as a precious metal restorer. He shares his knowledge with apprentices and through demonstrations and lectures in collaboration with various institutions and museums.
