Beginner's Sewing Course: Making Maxi Skirts

In the beginner's sewing course, we will focus on making a maxi skirt, which is also an easy starting point for beginners. While sewing a skirt is simpler than making pants, we will increase the difficulty by sewing a hidden zipper, a slit, and a shaped waistband.

In this course, we will learn how to take your own measurements, trace and model a basic pattern, and sew using both domestic and industrial sewing machines. We will also cover some sewing and ironing tricks.

Dates:

• Wednesday, January 8, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM
• Thursday, January 9, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM
• Friday, January 10, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Prerequisite:

NO, prior knowledge is not required. This workshop is intended for anyone who wants to develop or improve their sewing and pattern-making skills. The program is for those aged 14 and older.

Is the workshop considered training?

YES, by participating in the workshop, you will complete training for the sewing station. Afterward, you will be able to use this station independently during open sessions.

• Guidelines for purchasing material:

The fabric for the skirt is included in the course fee and will be provided during the class (100% cotton dark blue denim or 100% linen in natural or turquoise color). If you wish to use a different fabric, you will need to purchase it yourself. If you buy fabric, please follow these guidelines:

- The fabric should be woven (not knit), preferably made from natural fibers. Good options include cotton flannel, wool suiting, linen, ramie, etc.

- The fabric should be WITHOUT elastane.

- How much fabric to buy: the length of the skirt + 50 cm. If you have a special pattern (larger waist, extra length, etc.), please consult the mentors in the textile lab at tekstil@center-rog.sibefore purchasing.

- Pre-wash the fabric to avoid shrinkage.

After completing the 1st module, you are invited to join other advanced sewing courses:

• Advanced course on sewing shirts or shirt dresses
• Advanced course on sewing bomber jackets
• Advanced course on sewing coats

About the mentors:

The course will be led by mentors from the textile lab. Karmen Gombač – fashion designer, master pattern maker, and expert in various textile techniques and technologies. Zala Hrastar – fashion designer and expert in pattern making, sewing, upcycling, and quilting. Uroš Topić – head of the textile lab, textile and fashion designer, tailor, and expert in historical garments.

Participants should gather 15 minutes before the scheduled start time in the entrance hall of Center Rog. Please store your personal belongings in the lockers, which the mentor will show you. Please be on time, as late arrivals disrupt the workflow. In the case of a delay, entry to the lab cannot be guaranteed.

The program will be conducted in Slovenian unless otherwise stated.

In case of cancellation, you will be notified two days before the scheduled start.

If you are unable to attend the program, the registration fee is non-refundable, and it is not possible to change the date. You can transfer your participation to another person, but please notify us at least 24 hours before the program begins at the email address: tekstil@center-rog.si
