Kintsugi
1. 4. 2025

Kintsugi (Japanese for gold bonding), is a traditional Japanese technique of repairing broken ceramics using lacquer mixed with gold or other precious metal powders. Instead of hiding the broken part of the ceramic, it is highlighted, turning the broken pottery into a unique work of art. Kintsugi is not just a ceramic design technique, as it is deeply connected to the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, which values imperfection, impermanence and beauty in imperfection.
We will also learn about the kintsugi technique in this week's workshop in the ceramics lab. We will repair broken ceramics with a two-component epoxy glue enriched with bronze powder. We will learn how to mix and apply the glue correctly for a stable and lasting repair. With this knowledge, you will be able to repair broken ceramics at home according to the principles of kintsugi.
Bring to the workshop a broken ceramic object that you still keep and have not thrown away because of its special value. The finished products will be decorative and not suitable for food contact.
The workshop is part of the accompanying programme of the European Artistic Craft Days 2025, which will take place at Center Rog between 31 March and 5 April 2025.
