Kiln-Formed Glass: Fusing and Slumping

In this three-day course, we will explore two basic kiln-forming techniques for glass: fusing and slumping, where glass is shaped by bending over moulds. The course is intended for beginners and anyone who would like to explore the creative possibilities of artistic glass.

Through a combination of theory and hands-on work, we will learn about the properties of glass, the basics of product planning, preparing glass for firing, and different cold-working techniques. Each participant will make a unique glass plate and bowl, which they will take home after completing the course.

Day 1 – glass fusing
The first day will be dedicated to the fusing technique. We will begin with a short theoretical introduction to the properties of glass, product planning and preparation for work. We will then prepare sketches, cut individual glass elements and assemble them into a final composition for a plate. The pieces will be prepared for the first firing, during which the individual layers of glass fuse into a single form.

Day 2 – slumping and introduction to cold working
On the second day, we will make a bowl using the slumping technique, in which glass bends over a specially prepared mould during firing. At the same time, the plates from the first day will be fired again to achieve their final form.

In the second part of the day, we will learn the basics of cold working glass. On test pieces, we will try out different processes such as grinding, cutting, sawing, polishing, sandblasting, engraving and etching. We will also be able to prepare design sketches for decorating our pieces.

Day 3 – final finishing and decoration
On the final day, we will take the pieces out of the kiln and prepare them for finishing. If needed, we will round the edges, grind and polish the pieces, and decorate them further using selected decorative techniques. In this way, each plate and bowl will gain a unique look and a personal touch.

After completing the course, you will understand the basic processes of kiln-formed glass, know how to safely use basic cold-working tools, and be able to independently plan and make simple glass objects.

The course is intended for participants aged 14 and above. No prior knowledge is required. The programme counts as training for manual cold working of glass, machine cold working of glass and glass kilns.

About the mentors

Participants should gather in the entrance hall of Center Rog 15 minutes before the programme begins. Please store your personal belongings in the lockers, which will be shown to you by the mentors. Please do not be late, as this disrupts the working process. In case of late arrival, entry to the lab cannot be guaranteed.

The programme is held in Slovenian unless stated otherwise.

The programme is intended for participants aged 14 and above, unless stated otherwise.

If the programme is cancelled, you will be notified two days before the scheduled start.

If you are unable to attend, participation fees are non-refundable and it is not possible to change the date. You may transfer your place to another person; please let us know at least 24 hours before the programme starts at steklokeramika@center-rog.si.
