Building an Electronic Sound Device

In this workshop, we will explore the basics of synthesizers and sound synthesis, experiment with various modern electronic instruments, and create our own Victorian oscillator to take home.

The Victorian oscillator is an electro-mechanical device from the 19th century that generates electrical oscillations and played a key role in the discovery of radio wave technology. Today, similar oscillators are used for sound synthesis in musical synthesizers.

Due to its simple design, building this instrument will provide participants with an intuitive understanding of electromagnetism, oscillation, and electro-mechanical sound devices, such as old (school) bells.

The workshop is intended for children aged 7 to 12. Participants will learn about electronic music and the basics of electronic circuits.

About the mentors:

The workshop will be led by media artists Anže Sekelj and Staš Vrenko, who work on the HEX HAUS project. HEX instruments are based on original concepts and experience in developing artistic tools and multimedia installations, with the goal of creating educational, affordable, portable, and intuitive electronic devices that go beyond music creation, play, and education.

Participants should gather 15 minutes before the scheduled time in the entrance hall of Center Rog. Please store your personal belongings in the lockers provided, as instructed by the mentor. Do not arrive late, as this disrupts the workflow. In case of delay, we unfortunately cannot guarantee entry into the lab.

The program is conducted in Slovenian, unless stated otherwise.

If the workshop is canceled, you will be notified two days in advance.

If you are unable to attend, fees are non-refundable, and rescheduling is not possible. However, you may transfer your spot to another person – please inform us at least 24 hours before the workshop via email at fablab@center-rog.si.
