In-House Glass Course: Fusing and Glass Painting

How does a flat piece of glass become a unique cake stand?

In this two-day course, we will explore two popular glass-forming techniques: fusing, where individual pieces of glass are joined in the kiln, and glass painting and colouring. The programme combines theory and hands-on work, guiding us step by step from planning to the final object.

During the course, we will create a unique glass cake stand. We will begin by planning the shape, then learn the basics of cutting, grinding and preparing glass for firing. We will use a glass cutter and a glass saw, and learn techniques for cutting circles and organic shapes.

After the first firing, we will decorate the cake stand. We will learn how to use coloured glass powders and frits, as well as different techniques for applying coloured powder to glass. Through your own painted design, you will add a personal touch to the piece, which will then be fired again so that the colour permanently bonds with the glass.

No prior knowledge is required.

Final product: you will take home your own unique glass cake stand, made and decorated entirely by you.

Programme by session

Session 1: fusing and shaping the cake stand
The first session will focus on making the cake stand using the fusing technique. We will plan the object, learn the basics of cutting and grinding glass, cut circles and organic shapes, and properly prepare the glass for firing. The pieces will be placed in the kiln and prepared for the fusing process, where individual glass elements are joined into the final form.

Session 2: painting the cake stand
The second session will focus on decorating the already fired cake stand. We will explore coloured glass powders and frits, different ways of applying coloured powder, and preparing the piece for the second firing, during which the decoration permanently bonds with the glass.

The programme will take place over two sessions:

• Thursday, 12 November 2026, from 16:00 to 20:00
• Thursday, 19 November 2026, from 16:00 to 20:00

The course counts as training in manual cold working of glass and glass kilns.

About the mentors

The course is led by Nika Šantej and Nina Podobnikar.

Participants should gather in the entrance hall of Center Rog 15 minutes before the programme begins. Please store your personal belongings in the lockers indicated by the mentor. Do not be late, as this disrupts the working process. In case of late arrival, entry to the lab cannot be guaranteed.

The programme is held in Slovenian unless stated otherwise.

The programme is intended for participants over the age of 14 unless stated otherwise.

In case of cancellation, you will be notified two days before the planned start of the programme.

If you are unable to attend the programme, the fee is non-refundable and the date cannot be changed. You may transfer your place to another person by notifying us at least 24 hours before the start at steklokeramika@center-rog.si.
