In the advanced biomaterials course, we will work with and explore living organisms cultivated for the purpose of producing functional materials. The focus will be on the use of mycelium, bacterial cellulose (kombucha), and textiles grown from plant roots. Special attention will also be given to 3D printing with biomaterials and the possibilities of bioprinting in the Green Lab.

Because biomaterials develop through growth processes, the work will be organized in several phases. Participants will monitor the materials’ development over time and study different processing methods — from controlling humidity and temperature to drying and hardening. For each organism, we will investigate how its biological dynamics affect the final properties of the material.

As part of the workshops, participants will create test samples and working prototypes from the various materials. Pre-prepared molds and other tools will be available, but participants will also have the opportunity to develop their own ideas. They will learn how to design and make molds, as well as how to establish the conditions needed for the growth and formation of the materials being studied.

As an example, in the case of mycelium, we will guide its growth within the substrate and then explore different approaches — from stopping growth to intentional continued colonization, where the material itself takes on the shaping of the final form of the product, and even real mushrooms can grow out of the finished object.

The course includes an introduction to the safe and independent use of equipment and tools in the Green Lab. Participants will gain practical skills for working in a laboratory environment, which is a prerequisite for future independent projects and research involving biomaterials.

The program is intended for anyone interested in using biomaterials in design, research, or prototype development. No prior knowledge is required, though an interest in natural sciences, technology, or sustainable production is recommended.

The program is for those over 14 years old.

Duration: 5 sessions of 3 hours

  • Wednesday, February 4, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM
  • Wednesday, February 11, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM
  • Wednesday, February 18, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM
  • Wednesday, February 25, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM
  • Wednesday, March 4, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Prerequisite:

NO, prior knowledge is not required.

Is the workshop considered training?

YES, by participating in the course, you will complete training for the laboratory workstation. Next time, you will be able to use this workstation independently during open sessions.

About the mentors:

The course will be led by mentors from the Green Lab.

Participants should gather 15 minutes before the scheduled start time in the entrance hall of Center Rog. Please store your personal belongings in the lockers, which the mentor will show you. Please be on time, as late arrivals disrupt the workflow. In the case of a delay, entry to the lab cannot be guaranteed.

The program will be conducted in Slovenian unless otherwise stated.

In case of cancellation, you will be notified two days before the scheduled start.

If you are unable to attend the program, the registration fee is non-refundable, and it is not possible to change the date. You can transfer your participation to another person, but please notify us at least 24 hours before the program begins at the email address: zeleni@center-rog.si

We look forward to your company and creative collaboration.
