In this masterclass, we will explore the entire process of making ceramics—from raw clay found in nature to a finished, functional object. We will work with locally sourced clay, which we will collect, clean, and prepare ourselves, gaining a direct and hands-on understanding of the material in its most authentic form.

The course combines fieldwork, hands-on practice in the ceramics lab, and lectures from the fields of geology, archaeology, and contemporary design. Through this process, we will investigate how natural materials shape the objects we use every day and how traditional knowledge can be connected with contemporary approaches. In the second part, we will develop our own material samples and concepts for functional objects, exploring how modern technologies can help reinterpret material heritage.

Programme by Days

Day 1 – Clay in Nature
We begin outdoors by collecting local clay. We will learn about its geological origins, properties, and the differences between various types. The introduction will be led by designer Rok Oblak, who works extensively with natural materials.

Day 2 – History and Material Knowledge
This day is dedicated to understanding ceramics more broadly. We will explore its history—from its earliest forms to traditional techniques—and attend a lecture on the geological formation and composition of clay.

Day 3 – Material Preparation
The collected materials will be cleaned and prepared for use. We will examine their properties, compare different types of clay, and consider how these characteristics influence the final result.

Day 4 – Exploration and Prototyping
The focus will be on experimentation and independent work. Participants will develop initial prototypes and fire test samples. The day will follow an open format, encouraging exploration and discovery.

Day 5 – Material Experiments
On the final day, we will experiment with new mixtures by adding minerals, sand, crushed materials, or organic additives to the clay, exploring how these elements affect structure, texture, and the final appearance of the objects.

Who Is It For?

The masterclass is intended for designers and artists with basic knowledge of working with clay who wish to deepen their understanding of materials, sustainability, and the relationship between traditional and contemporary techniques.

The masterclass will be held in English.
