Beginner CNC Mini Course: Organic Catch-All Tray

In this beginner CNC mini course, we will use a CNC machine to make a unique wooden catch-all tray for jewellery, keys and other everyday objects.

Each participant will design their own piece and learn how contemporary technologies can be used in woodworking. The goal of the course is to create a personal, functional and unique tray that you will take home at the end of the programme.

The programme takes place over three sessions. We will explore the basics of 3D modelling, prepare a model for CNC machining, learn how to use the CNC machine safely and finish the wooden piece by hand.

Programme by session

Session 1: 3D modelling and introduction to CNC
In Onshape, we will learn the basics of 3D modelling and create a 3D model of our tray. We will also get to know the basic operation of the CNC machine.

Session 2: toolpath preparation and CNC machining
We will import the model into Fusion 360, where we will prepare the CAM setup and toolpath. We will then learn more about safe CNC machine use and produce the first pieces.

Session 3: hand finishing and finalising the product
We will sand the pieces by hand, refine them and prepare them for everyday use.

Through the course, participants will gain knowledge of 3D modelling, basic CAM preparation, safe CNC machine use and hand finishing of wood.

Please bring your own laptop to the first session. Before the course begins, please also create a user account in Onshape.

Schedule

The programme will take place over three sessions:

• Thursday, 8 October 2026, from 17:00 to 20:00
• Thursday, 15 October 2026, from 17:00 to 20:00
• Thursday, 22 October 2026, from 17:00 to 20:00

No prior knowledge is required.

The course counts as CNC training. After completing the course, you will be able to use the relevant workstation independently, in accordance with the lab rules.

About the mentor

The course will be led by Jaka Kordiš, mentor of the Wood Lab.

Participants should gather in the entrance hall of Center Rog 15 minutes before the programme begins. Please store your personal belongings in the lockers indicated by the mentor. Do not be late, as this disrupts the working process. In case of late arrival, entry to the lab cannot be guaranteed.

The programme is held in Slovenian unless stated otherwise.

In case of cancellation, you will be notified two days before the planned start of the programme.

If you are unable to attend the programme, the fee is non-refundable and the date cannot be changed. You may transfer your place to another person by notifying us at least 24 hours before the start at les@center-rog.si.
