Exhibition Heritages of the Future by the platform for contemporary crafts and design MADE IN

Today, May 15, 2025, the final exhibition of the MADE IN platform, which explores contemporary crafts and design, opens. The opening will take place at 6 PM in the Large Hall of Center Rog and at 8 PM at the Museum of Architecture and Design (MAO).
The Heritage of the Future exhibition presents the results of a two-year collaboration between designers, artisans, scientists, and other experts, facilitated by the MADE IN platform for contemporary craftsmanship and design, involving ten organizations from six European countries.
It will be on view until September 6th (Center Rog), and until September 14th (MAO).
- In September, a final international conference will take place at Center Rog, where an extensive catalogue will also be presented.
With over 60 projects, the platform, while encouraging critical reflection on contemporary design, artistic practices, and the science of cutting-edge materials, has explored new ways of transferring knowledge preserved in the rich heritage of craftsmanship and science.
The exhibition is based on research of traditional skills, local materials, and scientific methods and their interconnection. It represents a dynamic intersection between craft knowledge, contemporary design, and technologies that are constantly evolving.
The exhibited works include a wide range of expressive means – from installations, objects, and materials to tools, videos, and research documentation. All were created within residencies, workshops, and field research grounded in local knowledge and experimental methods of participating authors and groups.
The works are arranged into four thematic sections: reinterpretation of craft heritage, hybrid environmental practices, heritage and natural resource innovations, and learning and knowledge transfer.
Each section opens new paths for contemporary craft practices based on intertwining diverse knowledge, skill exchange, and a sustainable approach. Together, they offer a fresh perspective on craft as a living, responsive, and evolving field that responds to contemporary social and environmental challenges.
Among the exhibited works are:
- objects woven from local plants such as palm leaves and bulrush;
- mycelium-based materials;
- objects created through a new understanding of blacksmithing practices;
- findings from research of the Mediterranean Sea: natural dye from sea snails, a demonstration of the use of discarded weapons, and an exploration of the interplay between technology and craft in the creation of new mythologies;
- results of collaborations between fashion designers, toy makers, and ceramicists;
- insights into the use of liquid silk in sustainable wool processing;
- experimental approaches to cultivating living algae cultures for textile dyes;
- research projects that use traditional crafts as inspiration for regenerative land practices and the strengthening of urban biodiversity.
The exhibited works are organized into four thematic sections: Reinterpretation of Craft Heritage, Hybrid Environmental Practices, Innovations in Heritage and Natural Resources, and Learning and Knowledge Transfer. Each section explores and opens up new possibilities for contemporary craft practices based on the fusion of diverse knowledge and skill exchange. Together, they offer a fresh perspective on craft as a living, evolving field that can effectively respond to many of today’s social and environmental challenges.
Renata Zamida, Director of Center Rog:
“Rog is a space that, through the MadeIn platform, has enabled international creativity to connect with the local context over the past three years, through our nine production workshops and five residency studios available to creative tandems. The successful realization of the exhibition in Ljubljana is also a testament to the excellent cooperation between two public institutions whose strategic focus clearly intersects – comprehensive support for the creative sector working in the fields of design, architecture, craft, engineering, and research.”
A parallel programme will take place at Center Rog during the exhibition.
June programme:
- 12 June–3 July – Silver Jewellery with Crystal Glass Course (registration)
- 21 June at 7 PM – Guided tour of the Heritage of the Future exhibition, part of the “Summer Museum Night” programme (registration)
- 21 June at 6 PM and 8 PM – Wild Clay Extrusion Workshop (led by Rok Oblak), held in the exhibition space of the Grand Hall as a drop-in activity; no registration required, part of the “Summer Museum Night” programme
