From mulberry to silk thread
The mulberry tree, with its rich history and important role in silk production, will be the focus of an engaging lecture by Mr. Janez Škalič, an experienced Slovenian silkworm farmer. On Saturday, August 24, 2024, he will present the process from mulberry to silk thread at the Rog Center and share his knowledge about silkworm cultivation.
The mulberry is a fruit tree with a broad canopy and tasty fruit. It originates from Asia, but was brought to Europe by Venetian traders in the 12th century. Not for its fruit, but because silk could not be produced without mulberries, and silk fabric was highly valued and sought after even back then. Fresh mulberry leaves are the only food consumed by silkworm caterpillars before they spin cocoons and then transform into adult butterflies.
Mr. Janez Škalič, one of the most experienced silkworm farmers in Slovenia, will present the process "from mulberry to silk thread." In an engaging lecture, he will share his experiences and secrets of silkworm cultivation. He will also bring mulberry leaves, some cuttings, and caterpillars with him.
Children and adults are welcome!
The lecture will take place on Saturday, August 24, in two sessions at the multipurpose classroom of the Rog Center on the 2nd floor:
- from 10:00 to 11:30
- from 15:00 to 16:30
Participation in the events is free of charge. The lecture is organized by the store Gallerio L'arte di seta, which is hosting a pop-up shop at the Rog Center in August. Registrations for the event can be sent to: info@galleria.si.
