Training: Mimaki Digital Printer

The training on the digital printing station is intended to teach the safe and proper use of the MIMAKI TX300P digital printer.

The Mimaki digital printer uses an 8-cartridge system with reactive dyes to achieve exceptional color depth and variety. Reactive dyes (used for printing on natural cellulose and protein fibers, as well as polyamide) are among the most durable and vivid for digital textile printing.

For digital printing, the fabric must first be properly prepared—coated with a special pre-treatment that allows the dye to migrate into the fiber during fixation and bind to it permanently. Printing on untreated, uncoated fabric would therefore be non-durable and unusable. It is also not possible to print on finished products or semi-finished items (t-shirts, bedding with zippers and buttons, etc.). Users can purchase fabric for digital printing in the textile lab. Various types of cotton are available (cotton poplin for shirts, jersey and twill for bags or jackets), cotton-linen blends (for bedding, summer dresses, and shirts), and silk (densely woven satin suitable for scarves, evening dresses, etc.).

How will the training on the digital printer proceed?

1. Participants will learn how to use the computer program to prepare prints (importing images, layout, dimension checks, repeat patterns, etc.). They will become familiar with the printer, how to mount a roll of fabric for printing, thread it correctly, and perform a test print. Together, we will make a print sample, which will later be fixed.
2. After a successful test print, the printed fabric piece will be fixed in a steamer. The fixed fabric will be washed and the final result checked. We will learn how to avoid possible errors and what can be done if they occur.

How do I prepare an image/design for fabric printing?

• The image/design can be in a standard JPEG format. You can email the file to tekstil@center-rog.si and transfer it to the computer in the textile lab, where it will be prepared for printing.
• Each participant can print 0.5 linear meters of fabric (100% cotton poplin, suitable for shirts, bedding, pillowcases, etc.).
• The design content can be arbitrary: it can be a single motif that covers the entire print area (approx. 150 cm x 50 cm), or a smaller design that repeats. In the latter case, the image should contain only one segment of the repeating pattern (one repeat), which can then be multiplied in the computer program to fill the full width and length of the fabric.

Since our lab prints only small quantities of fabric, there are more possibilities for errors and irregularities (smudges on fabric edges, condensation drops from the steamer on the print, etc.). These are part of the experimental process and learning new technologies, so claims for unsuccessful prints will not be accepted.

Participants should gather 15 minutes before the scheduled start time in the entrance hall of Center Rog. Please store your personal belongings in the lockers, which the mentor will show you. Please be on time, as late arrivals disrupt the workflow. In the case of a delay, entry to the lab cannot be guaranteed.

The program will be conducted in Slovenian unless stated otherwise.

The program is intended for participants older than 14 years, except where noted otherwise.

In case of cancellation, you will be notified two days before the scheduled start.

If you are unable to attend the program, the registration fee is non-refundable, and it is not possible to change the date. You can transfer your participation to another person, but please notify us at least 24 hours before the program begins at the email address: tekstil@center-rog.si
