Yoh Yasuda (JP)

Yoh Yasuda is a visual artist from Japan who lives and works between Japan and Indonesia. She holds a Master’s degree from Tokyo University of the Arts and works across a range of media, including sculpture, video, and spatial installations. Her practice explores the relationship between the natural environment, personal memories, and traditional cultures that are gradually disappearing under the influence of digitalisation. Yasuda was introduced to kite making during childhood. Her mother comes from Nagasaki Prefecture, a region known for its traditions of hata and baramon hata kites. Since 2019, Yasuda has been researching Indonesian kite culture and the natural environment of the Pacific islands, developing kite making as a sustainable form of artistic expression. Her work has been presented at numerous exhibitions, artist residencies, and international kite festivals. During her residency at Center Rog, she will develop Membranes of Wind, a project that approaches wind as an active co-creator. She will create a system of kites with membrane structures that exist only in relation to wind and gravity. The project draws inspiration from Japanese and Indonesian kite-making traditions and from the morphology of the Carniolan lily, one of Slovenia’s distinctive native plants. Yasuda will work in the Textile Lab, FabLab, and Wood Lab and will also present the project through public workshops and outdoor kite-flying events.
